Give them a big hand

The challenge this week at

Forever Night's Freaky Fri is Wicked Treats.

I eat lots of popcorn. I'd better be checking mine for spiders.

I want to give my husband a big hand today. We just returned from

Charleston, SC, after having his 6 month check up after treatment for

a lung tumor. All is fine. The tumor shows no

activity after his radiation treatment. He will have

another CT scan in 6 months.

My poor husband seems to be a cancer magnet. About 10 years

ago he had his cancerous bladder removed. About 6 months ago he

was diagnosed with the lung tumor and a pre-leukemic blood condition.

The lung tumor was very small and could be treated. The blood

condition will require a lifetime of chemo to keep at bay.

Thank goodness the chemo is a mild dose and he tolerates it well

and has relatively few side effects.

You would expect spreading from the original bladder cancer

but that isn't the case. His cancers are all new and unrelated to

each other. Who would have ever thought of such a

possibility. Not us.

Getting a late start with posting today. We ran out and did a little

shopping. Nothing exciting... although, I did buy myself a really nice

hoodie on sale. Speaking of sales, has everyone seen what has happened

at JCP aka J.C. Penney? Here's the scoop

Sale prices become everyday prices. The company will use sales data from last year to slash prices on all merchandise at least 40 percent or lower than the previous year’s prices. So, a woman’s St. John’s Bay blouse regularly priced at $14.99 could have the “Every Day” price of $7.

Simpler pricing. Penney will use whole figures when pricing items. In other words, you won’t see jeans with a price tag of $19.99, but rather $20.

This new strategy of theirs might have interested me more if they

hadn't come up with such an obnoxious tv ad. Video here. Keep the

sound on low.

That is the theme this week at Macbre Monday Challenge even tho

we are to include at least a portion of a map.

This sort of reminds me of romance novel cover. I guess it

is missing the ravishingly beautiful woman. And, where is Fabio?

I did read those as a teenager but not any longer.

Nora Roberts is about as romance novelish as I get these days.

I just finished reading the Cat Who Dropped a Bombshell

by Lillian Jackson Braun

Her Cat Who series began in 1966. Her titles fill up a whole page in

her books. The above novel is #28 published in 2006. These are

such cute and quirky novels. They take place in the small town of Pickax in

Moose County, 400 miles North of everywhere. Just plain

fun reading.

Another rainy day for us here in beautiful Murrells Inlet. Overall, this

has been our best winter weather in the last few years. Most of our days

have been so balmy. Love it, love it.

Now this was really fun to do.

A little more traditional with Inspiration Avenue's Butterfly

challenge. I think I'm late with my entry but I'm posting it anyway.

And last at Collage Obsession we are Dancing.

I chose to use my own and created this........

We have a favorite chicken take out place, Bojangles. We don't

eat a lot of fried chicken but when we do....it's off to Bojangles.

Fried crispy with a hint of Cajun spice and biscuits to die for.

Lucky us, they just opened a new place so much closer to

where we live. So last night was Bojangles and a Netflix movie.

We watched Larry Crowne with Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts.

I think the chicken got a better review from us than the movie.

There is a lot of fishing going on around here. I'm used to

fishing in rivers and streams. Here it is all ocean fishing.

There are so many boats....little Jon boats to huge fishing boats

and everything in between. It never fails, when I stroll the beach

I always see someone with a line thrown in the water.

In Georgetown there is a shrimp dock that looks almost like

this painting. It is off by itself down a dirt lane. Very picturesque.

You can also find local shrimp sold from the back of pick up trucks.

While walking the boardwalk in old Murrells Inlet I watched

a fresh oyster catch being unloaded.

Caught in the morning and on the menu at Drunken Jack's that same day.

My last one was horrible and I've been letting it grow out. They'll

The Many Faces of Women

This is for this week's challenge at

Rainbow Lady's Challenge

The Many Faces of Women

I had to make two creations for this challenge.

I used this image because it was love at first sight.

I didn't do a thing to it except add the beautiful poppies and

the frame.

My second piece for this challenge is inspired by the

murals that you see on buildings these days. Mainly,

the ones that I've seen in LA.

It was always fun to drive along the LA River and see the LA River Cats.

Paper Dolls

At Inspiration Avenue this week the challenge is

Paper Dolls

What little girl hasn't played with paper dolls. Just because you have grown up

doesn't mean that you have to stop. I've just begun to explore again the

magic of paper dolls. These days they tend to be more artful than playful.

This was sent for an art doll swap. My inspiration came

from older issue of Somerset Studio magazine.

This one is digitally created. I love the trim for her bodice.

It's trim that I cropped from a shabby chic lamp photo. In fact,

every thing that I used for this piece is just that.....a little piece

cropped here and there from a whole photo. I love the soft colors.

Have you noticed that all of the TV craft shows have dried up

and blown away? I sure do miss tuning in to Carol Duval or

Crafting Across America. HGTV used to have a really nice

daytime line up of crafting shows. Now they seem to focus on

decorating. Which is fine. I love Color Spash with David Bromstad

and House Hunters Int. I'm not much of a reality(?) show fan but

I do watch Design Star.

The internet has come to our rescue with tons of crafting technique videos

on YouTube, crafter's blogs and the new My Craft Channel which

began June 2011. My Craft Channel Blog is, here, which has

was all scheduled to move into assisted living on Friday.

This had been in the works for months with her approval.

Well, she called Friday morning and said she wasn't going.

she cancels on the day of her move.

This is an appropriate challenge for the season. Even here in balmy

Myrtle Beach we are experiencing a winter cold snap.

Just a few days ago we were enjoying shirt sleeve weather, then boom,

a cold snap came along. At least it isn't as bad as last year when

old man winter really hit us hard. We had snow three times.

Once is unusual but 3 times. It even stuck for awhile.

Ceil Chapman is a new name in fashion design to me.

She was really quite famous and designed for some very famous

names. She was a favorite of Marilyn Monroe.

This MM dress was put up for auction in Las Vegas in 2010.

Unfortunately, after 40 years in storage there is some staining.

My contribution to the Collage Obsession challenge this week Trio.

I had a very pleasant call last night. I found out that an apt

is now available for my mom in an assisted living place.

I've been so anxious to get her in a place where she will be

looked after and have a social life again. Mom is 91 and living

alone since the recent death of my brother. Needless to say

this is worrisome for me and mom is so isolated now.

All is about to change for the better.

Wild Mustangs

My home for over 20 years was a small community along the

beautiful Truckee River near Reno, Nv. We had the lush beauty of the

Truckee and the stark beauty of the high desert surrounding our property.

This is one of the streets in the subdivision where I lived.

One of the things we had in abundance was wildlife.

We had coyote, raccoon, deer and often wild Mustangs as visitors.

The Mustangs roamed the foothills right behind our house.

These Mustangs were my inspiration for this piece.

Gingersnap - Livestock

I created this by combining two digital images and layering onto a torn

piece of black cardstock. The embellishment is a combination of

an old purse clasp, charms, tangled burlap threads and just a bit of

gold thread.

A bit of trivia about a friend and the Mustangs.

He worked at the BLM in Reno where Mustangs and burros

were corralled and put up for adoption. What always

tickled me is that he rode his horse to work.

Artastic Miss Oetken's Artists has the cutest 2nd grade student artwork inspired

by William Wegmand.

In my immediate land of odd, the leaves are falling with abandon.

I'm on my second of what will probably be plenty of porch and patio clean ups.

Soon the the trees should be bare and I can call the yard man to

come rake the complete yard.

I chose the Panda for my Asian tag because I remember seeing

live Pandas when they were on loan to the Columbus Zoo in 1992

We visited the Columbus Zoo just to see the Pandas. Our primary

destination was a Landscape and Garden Exhibition that was being held in Columbus.

The name escapes me but I do remember that I was disappointed in

the exhibition. The Pandas more than made up for that disappointment.

Jack Hanna has been the zoo Director since 1978. My mom

would turn on his TV show Into the Wild each day for her

dog Millie to watch. Millie loved to watch TV.

Another memorable time while touring Ohio was a horse drawn

canal boat tour of the Erie Canal. It was so quite and beautiful.

All that could be heard were the tow horses clopping down the

dirt trail.

I think that was the beginning of my love affair with

the beauty of the lush green that humidity brings.

We were then living in the high desert of Reno, NV.

It took about 15 years but I was able to retire

to a lush green beautiful place, South Carolina.

Not a lot of Steampunk here just sadness.

I do a lot of reading. Right now I'm reading Beach Music by

Pat Conroy. I can hardly get to sleep at night

without reading at least one chapter before I nod off.

I have been noticing that novelists use several terms quite often.

It doesn't seem to make a difference as to the book genre.

One that I notice the most is

malevolent

(muh-lev-uh-luh'nt)

wishing evil or harm to another or others; showing ill will; ill-disposed; malicious: His failures made him malevolent towardthose who were successful.

Part of my problem is my limited image program.

I'm just going to have to master Photoshop. I think I've been

saying that for quite some time now. But, now that I have cut back

on some of my commitments, I'm going to give it a go.

I borrowed several different elements from his artwork.

The fields, splats and how colorful his art can be.

Patterns

I haven't participated in a

Collage Obsession

challenge in just ages. But I love patterns, challenge theme,

and thought I'd give it a try.

This is what I came up with

Don't you just love the couple? They are from one of my

clip art programs. I like the soft curves of this couple

mixed with the hard shape of the cubes.

It is bright and sunny here today. I am surprised at how

chilly our Coastal Carolina winters can be. We woke up to

temps in the low 30s this morning. Burrrrrrr!

We had real, stick on the ground snow 3 times last winter.

Oh, I hope that doesn't happen again soon.

Steampunk Roundup

I have a lot of fun creating in the Steampunk style.

This is my latest effort and it is for

the Steampunk challenge at Three Muses.

They have a gorgeous sample up. Be sure to stop

in and take a look. Better yet, join in this fun challenge.

I haven't done many using a masculine theme. The image of the car

is an actual steam powered race car.

The 1906 Stanley Steam Car - The Fastest Car In The World

Louis S. Ross, with the Stanley Brothers assistance, built a Stanley steam engine equipped steam racer in 1905. The automobile was nicknamed the "Wogglebug" and was entered in the January 1905 Ormond Beach tournament. Louis S. Ross won the Dewar Trophy and nearly every other race on the Beach.

Over the weekend I did some cyber shopping for some items to use in

assemblage, collage and altered art. I found 2 new places to shop.

Nothing steampunk about my new bedspread.

This is pretty feminine for me but I really like it.

You should have seen hubby and me wrestle the top mattress to get

the bed skirt on. Whew!!! It was worth the struggle. It looks pretty nice all

put together on the bed.

I will most likely dismember her and just use the torso.

Poor dolly.

Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday. This is the time

that my family all gathered at my mom's for a wonderful day. As we all grew older

and our lives took us in all different directions our Thanksgiving get together

now lives in our memories. But, what a wonderful memory.

Black Friday falls on the day after Thanksgiving and has earned the reputation of being the busiest shopping day of the year. The name was adopted from an accounting term - red ink denotes a negative profit margin, where as "in the black" denotes a positive profit margin. Many retailers make or break their sales goals between Thanksgiving and Christmas, with the season kicking off on the Friday after Thanksgiving, hence the name "Black Friday."

Leaves

Our large Hickory tree is finally turning color.

The leaves will be dropping soon. This is a shot of how many leaves we

have to rake each year.

There are several trees in our yard and in the neighbor's yards

that blow in. As if ours aren't enough. Good news......

we have a yard man this year. He'll be doing leaf duty from now on.

This pic was taken shortly after we moved in. Since then we have

painted the house a creamy white with dark green shutters and light

green trim. It looks so much nicer than this horrible blue.

When I bought this at a craft fair it was called

a Christmas cactus. I think it is a Thanksgiving cactus because

it blooms every year at Thanksgiving.

It will be in full bloom soon.

It also does another small bloom in February.

Mom had a cactus that bloomed each Christmas.

She had quit putting up Christmas trees by then but her

gorgeous Christmas cactus was always in bloom when we'd

come to visit for the Holiday.

This is a work in progress. I've been working on this for quite sometime.

I'm thinking of making it the focal piece for a Fall collage.

The stamp is from Rubberstamp Ave. I stamped it on card stock
that I distressed with two colors of gold Distress Ink. I used a new
to me hybrid ink Palette by Stewart Superior. I used the black from the
Escher Cube Set

I really like this ink and I can see more of these gorgeous sets in my future.
The sets are based on colors used by famous artists.
I buy mine at OWSE at a very good price.
The image is colored using an assortment of oranges, yellows and purple
Copics.

Another element of my collage will be these leaves that I've altered
with Twinkling H20s in purple and green/gold.

Uhm, doesn't show up well here. But they do have a lovely
shimmer of purple and gold. I'm sure that I will be sharing the
completed collage.

Here is a tip that I got from an old Altered Arts Magazine.

If you find yourself with some free time, snip out lettering from
junk mail, mags, newspapers, etc., and store in baggies. They will be ready
for the next time you need random letters for a piece. Go one step
further and store by letter.

Well, it's been ages since I posted. So much has been going on in my life

recently. My husband diagnosed with not one kind of cancer but two, the recent

death of my younger brother and my 91 year old mom needing special care now.

They say things happen in 3s. I'm a believer now.

This morning the creative bug bit me when I saw this challenge

for Zetti Art at Digitalmania.

The stamp is 'Spirit Woman' by Paula Best. I love her stamps.

Pumpkin Head Paper Doll

I probably shouldn't be posting this now, but, oh heck,

why not. My paper doll will be a feature on

Fun with Numbers

Wow, did I ever change my train of thought on this piece.

I was going vintage with this and then I found this

fabulous wallpaper. This became the background for my

very simple digital piece.

I altered the color of the chair from a wheat color to the bright pink

and the orange tabby to a gray tabby.

I think it's kind of fun.

This is for the Crazy Amigo Challenge - Numbers.

I don't seem to be getting much done today. The problem is that I started

a new book. And, there goes my day. I should be curled up in the chair

not the cat.

A New To Me Ink

It is a hybrid ink called Palette by Stewart Superior.

Fall into Golfing

It is Fall and this post is all about Golfing.

Pretty funny since I've never even held a golf club.

Golf is really big here in Myrtle Beach. We are said to have

over 100 golf courses in our area. I think they make a beautiful

addition to our landscape. People come from all over to play on our

courses.....amateurs and pros alike.

We are big on Mini-Golf. Yep, we have one of those on almost

every block. That is because we are a tourist town right on the beach featuring

many outdoor activities.

We even have an annual mini golf tournament here.

The U.S. ProMiniGolf Association Masters

It is taking place right here, right now, this weekend.

Season 7 "Bachelor" star Charlie O'Connell

This year the tournament is being held at the

Hawaiian Rumble.

Wow, this place is famous.

Hawaiian Rumble has been featured as one of the "golfiest, must-see places" in America by Golf Magazine. It has also been featured in many national TV shows, and newspaper and magazine publications. For example, in 1992 Crook & Chase along with the Nashville Network televised their entire show from here. In l993 Dennis Hopper and Tom Derringer filmed a scene from the movie Chasers. In 1999 Home and Garden TV did a segment on their travel show. In 2002 NBC Today Show with Matt Lauer and Katie Couric covered the Masters. On May 22, 2003 the Travel Channel filmed Hawaiian Rumble for the Top Ten Miniature Golf Courses in the United States..

Yesterday, I while waiting for Lorne to finish his chemo treatment,

I thumbed thru the doctor's office collection of reading material.

We have several freebie newspapers in our area and the

doctor's offices seem to have them all.

This particular one is called

I tore this out and that out and I will file them away

for future reference for things to do and things to make.

I kind of like how this turned out.

Autumn = Apples and Apples = Cider and that = Yummy for the Tummy

I'm one of those people that eat an apple a day.

I don't know if it makes me any healthier but I love the

sweet crunch or a really good apple.

Fall is the season where people are invited to apple orchards

to pick their own or buy them by the bushel.

We don't have an orchard near us where we live in SC.

But, when I lived in Reno, NV, visiting Apple Hill was something

that we did often. The drive would take us up and around Lake Tahoe

and then down towards Sacramento, Ca. It was something that

I always looked forward to doing. All along this old hiway were

orchards with fresh apples for sale, crafts and lots of places for

fresh baked apple pie. Yummy!!!

Right now my favorite apple is a New Zealand variety called Jazz.

I can only get these at the local Piggly Wiggly market. They are

dense, crisp and just the right sweetness. Love them.

To make my card I colored with Prisma Colored Pencils. The white background

has been distressed with a light brown chalk and the edge distressed with

Tea Dye Distress Ink. The black border layer is a slightly distressed

black paper and the base card is textured and bright red.

My coloring with colored pencil leaves a lot to be desired. But, I'll

keep practicing.

The Sad Story of the Mummy Card

shown us the Shaving Cream Technique.

week she shows us a beautiful piece painted with Distress Inks.

Wednesday is Wednesday's Women

with a Special Guest Artist and the Sunday Papers with me.

I saw Jamie's card in the current issue of Paper Crafts Magazine.

This is my kind of cute and I wanted to make one.

I gathered up the following supplies

I didn't have any orange card stock so I printed off the size that I needed.

Next I cut my panels to size and then the wrapping of the twill began.

Now the sad story begins. The twill that I had ordered from

OWSE was not any kind of twill that I was familiar with.

Thin and whimpy not strong and sturdy like twill should be.

!!! Phooey !!!

It looks terrible.

No comparison to what Jamie used for her card. I didn't want anyone

else being as disappointed in the product as I was so it is no

longer available in the OWSE shop.

Paper Craft Magazine for you. I've subscribed to

this magazine for quite awhile now and I'm never disappointed

in the cards shown. Lot's of good ideas.

Back to Basics.....Keeping it Simple

When I started stamping oh so many years ago this is the type of card that

I routinely made. Maybe a layer once in awhile and a bow for embellishment.

Over all there were no layers just a stamped and colored image with a simple sentiment inside.

Have I com full circle? I'm finding I'm doing more clean and simple

cards than ever before. I love this look.

I guess you would like to see what I babbling on about.

Ta Da....here it is in all of its simplicity.

I suppose I should have scanned it with a colored paper for background, but

I didn't. I wanted instant gratification with the card so I chose a

simple coloring page that I Googled. These come in so darn handy and

there are lots of free ones of almost anything you would like.

The hearts and sentiment were printed on white

cardstock and colored with gold and silver gel pen.

Something else that I like to use.

So there you have it Me....Keeping is Simple.

In Celebration of my Brother

March 1, 1950 - September 3, 2011

It was a sad day when my brother died at such a young age.

It has been so hard on everyone in my family.

Especially, my mother. A mother just isn't supposed to see

one of her children die. She was there for my brother right up to

the end.

Here are a few pictures taken by my daughter while we were in Montana

to spread his ashes.

Rest in peace Jimmy. We all miss you.

Halloween in 10 Minutes or less

I have a couple of simple things to make for Halloween.

My children are grown so Halloween is not such a big deal

at my house anymore. Children sure make a difference in how Holidays

are celebrated. If you are like me, these easy peasy ideas may be of help you.

Here are the supplies that I used

First I made a simple tag using a die cut from the paper collection

and a stamp from these fun Halloween Stamps. Did some

direct to paper smudging with black ink tied on a ribbon and in

less that 10 minutes....done. Quick and easy.

I love this stamp set.

My next project is a quick and easy card.

What I used here is a vinyl stick-on for a window. I used a sheet of

paper from the collection. It doesn't show that well here but

the colors are purple, beige, gray with silver metallic stripes.

The sentiment is another stamp from the collection that has

been stamped with black ink on silver metallic card stock.

I blotted it a bit to dry it quickly and make it a little more distressed

and maybe make it a bit more spooky.
Another project completed in less than 10 minutes.

I really love the collection of papers. They are grown up Halloween patterns

that can be used all year long. Some even have steampunk potential.
The name is 13th Hour, 6 1/2" paper pad by Kaisercraft.
Here is just a sample of the great patterns.

Perfect for someone like me that prefers not to buy

a lot of Holiday specific papers.

One Stamp 2 Ways

I have 2 lovely big windows in my craft room that overlook

my grassy side yard. It is a haven for squirrels and birds.

This morning I was treated to a beautiful male Cardinal.

He was just hopping and scratching around not knowing

how much enjoyment he was bringing to me.

We didn't have Cardinal's where I lived before. I'm glad

that I didn't know what I was missing.

This reminded me of two cards that I made using the same Cardinal Stamp.

This stamp came from CowTown Stamps

It is currently out of stock at this time but will find lots of other gorgeous

bird images there.

I've entered these cards in the challenges listed below.

We've been having rain every day for days now. And, it has still been hot.

But, last night the tide has turned.....the weather is cool and bright with

sunshine this morning. I think maybe Fall is on it's way, finally. Perfect

crafting weather.

I also found a new to me product that I think will be a real money saver.

It is Helmar Scrap Dots 3 - D Liquid Adhesive.

This is do it yourself glue dots. You can customize any

size or thickness of your glue dot with this product.

Beginning an Art Journal

Very, very slowly I'm getting into making an Art Journal.

I've joined the Art Journal Club at

Outlaw Women Scrapbook Emporium Group

We have weekly chats on Monday and challenges to do. We

also get a daily prompt to help us along. I guess I need more

help than that because my journal is getting off to a very

slow start.

I will share my first page with you which just about says it all.

I've yet to decorate the cover. Our challenge for the cover is

to use depth and texture. I have something in mind but just haven't

gotten to it yet. I will share when I get it finished.

Quite awhile ago Suze Weinberg put out a notice that she was

It's been awhile........

It has been awhile since I've last posted.

A lot has been going on in my life and much of it hasn't

been very pleasant. I'm not very good about talking about

such things.

It seems I'm pretty much on hold with everything except my

immediate family. So many things happened in such a short amount

of time. My husband was diagnosed with lung cancer and a pre-leukemic blood

condition and is undergoing treatment, my brother died on September 3rd at age 61

of pancreatic cancer and my 91 year old mother isn't doing well.

Here is a photo of the last time all of my family was together.

We have all gathered at Mom's for a 4th of July weekend.

Nature Silhouette

I'm very late with this post this morning. Oh well,

life gets in the way sometimes. Life meaning being on the

fringes of Hurricane Irene as she came near our area. Thank goodness

we didn't have a lot of damage in our area. We did have quite

heavy winds and downpours come through.

That was just about enough for me.

Today begins a brand new challenge week at

I Did It Creations Challenges

Not only do you get a new challenge today but you

also get me posting the challenge blog again.

Yep, Wendy has left us and I am back again.

It is fun though. I love posting each new winner.

It could be you this week.

Our new challenge theme is

Nature.

This is the card that I made

using our current sponsor, Toucan Scraps, beautiful

silhouette digi stamps.

I did my card in an image program. I found this beautiful picture and

resized it to a larger size and then to another smaller. I layered the

smaller in the center of the base image and then highlighted with

a shadow. The last step was adding the silhouette. Oh and

finding a nice quote. I love this technique and use it every once

in awhile.
